At the core of 5CLIR programming are the peer-led seminars and workshops during two 10-week semesters, one in the fall and one in the spring. These seminars and workshops are planned and moderated by members and are different every session.
Broadly speaking, the purpose of a Seminar is to acquire intellectual learning about a subject though presentations and/or discussions. Workshops, on the other hand, focus on improving a skill-set. Not all offerings fit neatly into one or another of these categories: are the ever-popular “Writing to Remember” groups seminars or workshops? And even seminars can take on many forms, from the “standard” presentation-and-discussion format where each participant researches a subtopic and presents the results to completely discussion-oriented formats where everyone reads, views, or listens to the same material and participants take turns leading discussions. Variations are possible within a seminar too, limited only by the imaginations of the moderators and participants.
