21SuFE Feminism: Our Stories Ourselves
Moderator: Finnegan Alford -Cooper
Up to 12 participants; no auditors
Mondays, July 5- August 2 at 2:00 PM – via Zoom
Through storytelling participants will explore the experience of our generation with the feminist movement and its ideals. We will try to answer some key questions. Were individual decisions driven by personal circumstance or socio-historical factors or both? Have older women paved the way, making tough choices and refusing to “fit in”, so that younger women have more opportunities with less social rejection? Over the years what has feminism meant or not meant to us? How does our generation respond to “me too”, and “white (male) supremacy”? How can members of our generation identify and communicate what we’ve learned, our wisdom, to younger generations? What is the relevance of our experiences to young people today? Participants will share one or more stories (in any manner they choose-writing one’s own story, sharing a short, published story or essay, or providing a pictorial presentation), and provide “advance” questions to all participants to focus our discussions.
21SuGJ Great Jazz, 1930-1960

Wednesdays, June 16- July 21 at 2:00 PM – via Zoom
This mini-seminar will feature playing and discussing some of the best Jazz from the middle of the 20th century, 1930-1960. It will be conducted via Zoom using YouTube videos whenever possible.
Class members will be asked to form 5 teams, each team responsible for artists playing a particular instrument (e.g. sax, piano, trumpet, trombone, or clarinet)
Each team will select the best YouTube videos they can find featuring their team’s instrument. They will be asked to play and discuss their videos for the full 2 hours of one day’s class.
21SuGL The Great Lakes This program has been cancelled

Tuesdays, June 22- July 20 at 10:00 AM – via Zoom
We will discuss the book The Death an Life of the Great Lakes by Dan Egan. The Great Lakes, with 21% of the world’s fresh water, were first breached from the East to allow ocean vessels in, and then breached into the west to allow sewage to go out. With invasive species and agricultural runoff destroying the lake and dry areas wanting to bring water from the lakes for their use, the Great Lakes are in great peril.
21SuLS Like Shining From Shook Foil: The Poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins
Moderator: Lise Armstrong
Up to 10 participants; no auditors
Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 6, 8, 13 and 15 at 2:00 PM – via Zoom
We will read and discuss a dozen or more poems by this great 19th century poet who wasn’t published until long after his death. Like Emily Dickinson, his stylistic innovations and vocabulary put him well out of the conventional mainstream of his day. Hopkins was deeply religious and saw God’s spirit in every blade of grass and every feather on a bird’s wing.
