To explore the decades we grew up in, and how differently we as individuals lived and perceived them.
Most of us grew up during the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and 60’s, a very different time for all of us. We lived in different places. Some of us lived in cities like New York, others lived in small towns where they knew all their neighbors and were on a first name bases with the butch and/or the mailman. Still others may have come from farming communities, etc. It was different for all of us. Some families, like yours or someone you knew may have struggled more than others and to find work outside their town, which required traveling. A different time and place for each of us.
Format: Seminar
Role of participants: Participants will be expected to prepare a presentation based on the decade(s) they grew up in. A comparison between then and now, the cost of various items from food and clothing to entertainment. The ease or lack of acquiring items that were important to us. Please remember personal experiences add a certain flavor to the mix, then just reading from a book or article.

Resources: Most information can be found on the internet. Also, the libraries a good source. They have old newspapers on microfilm. Old newspapers will ads and information about those times. The sort of things that will help to jog your memory, a link to the way you remember what it was like for you.
The Moderator: A native New Yorker and retired public school teacher. I’ve been involved with LIR for the past five years. Having taken one or two seminars a semester and moderated once.
